Last Friday, December 2, 2011, a volleyball game between the San Sebastian Lady Stags and UPHSD Altas at the SBC Gym in Manila was marred by a melee between the Lady Stags' coach Roger Gorayeb and San Beda Red Lions mentor Frankie Lim. For some, it was the darkest hour of the NCAA. There were allegedly also some members of the San Beda men's basketball team that were involved during the brawl. It all started when a member of the men's volleyball team of San Sebastian threw some racial slurs against Adeogun Olaide, a Nigerian import of the Red Lions. Coach Roger Gorayeb on his statement via Saksi, said that there were no intentions to discriminate the Nigerian import and he just overheard what the men's volleyball players of San Sebastian were saying during their warm-up. Coach Frankie Lim on the other hand said that he got disappointed when Gorayeb turned his back when he was asking him to fix the problem. The big question that went viral on the internet was who really threw the first punch? It was an ugly fight between the two parties involved. There were claims that Dave Marcelo punched Mae Crisostomo, libero, of the Lady Stags. The incident spreaded like a virus over the internet most especially via social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Everyone had their own versions of the story and people who were there during the brawl took pictures and uploaded it on the internet. Meanwhile, mainstream media had their interview on both camps to observe fairness and non-biased reporting. The problem with people who started the hoax is that they never try to analyze and even scrutinize the situation. Yet, investigation will be conducted. Irresponsible tweeting and posting really fabricate what is true. We have to rely on facts not on a hearsay.
The world has become a global village. Life has been replaced by the word "Fast". Life is getting "Fast" and being "FAST" is life. We want to know what is the latest happening in a blink of an eye. We took advantage of what technology can bring us nowadays. We want everything in an instant. But we forgot the essence of being fair with our opinion. Yes, we can voice out what we feel about a certain situation. No one can stop us from doing that. But what is more meaningful if we try to observe equal judgment and not selfish thoughts? We don't have to ignite the fire even more. Rather, let's hope for a brighter picture. Something that everyone can benefit on it in the future.
We cannot move forward if we keep pulling each other down. That's basically why our country is slow to progress. I remember the movie "The Thin Red Line" and I would like to interpret the title this way, "In our life, there's always a thin red line that separates us from one another. Once we cross that line with the provocation to cause injury, don't expect that people will be nice to you."
As as of now, the NCAA committee will form an investigating team for the above matter. Let's pray that this dispute will be resolved as soon as possible. The NCAA season is not yet over.
