VOLLEYBALL CONGRESS

Sunday, January 1, 2012

Manila, Philippines – The Philippine Volleyball Federation will conduct a three-day National Referees Congress starting today in Baguio City.
“We want to update our referees with the current international rules of the game,” said newly elected PVF president Gener Dungo.
Resource speakers are Nestor Bello, chairman of the PVF referees commission, and Marvin Trinidad, commissioner of the rules of the game.
“This is a nationwide program. We will also conduct similar activities in the Visayas and Mindanao,” said the 38-yearold Dungo, who took over the helm this year from Pete Mendoza Jr.
A former varsity player, Dungo said his administration will also focus on grassroots program to discover new talents for future international competitions.
“Tapping and developing young potential players is the main thrust of my administration,” stressed Dungo.
Dungo, likewise, said he wants the country to compete anew in the Southeast Asian Games in 2013 in Myanmar after missing three previous editions.
The last time an RP volleyball team competed in the SEAG meet was in 2005 in Manila where the host won the overall title.
Volleyball last won the gold in the women’s competition in the 1993 SEAG in Singapore, beating powerhouse Thailand in the finals, 3-1. (Clyde Mariano)
