HATS OFF RED SPIKERS!

Monday, April 2, 2012 0 comments

Time flies by fast, especially when you’re having fun. Once senior year rolls around, Graduation is the main event. It’s hard to think about anything, but the cap and gown and making the most of the time left as an undergraduate. Surely, James Christian Lorca, Cherry Mae Quizon, Jose Carlo Rodriguez and Mat Rupert Miranda basked at leisure the day that was. The day when they first set foot onto the hallowed halls of the great Benedictine institution in Mendiola. After four grueling years of fair shares of trails and tribulations, they are now ready to make headway elsewhere. Proud Bedans infused with the knowledge and skills who are now about to take a big leap in their lives. They will be thrown into a bigger arena where they will be facing bigger challenges and put what they have learned in college into good use.

There's no denying the fact that they have scaled mountains and crossed rivers of trials only the courage of a hero would render surpassing achievement. James, Carlo and Mat got their Degree in Marketing and Corporate Communications. Lady Red Spikers Team Captain Cherry Mae Quizon finished with a Degree in International Business and Entrepreneurial Management. The El Capitan James Lorca expressed his gratitude to his Red Spikers family on his Facebook account -- ..."I'd like to thank the redspikers for the wonderful experience in college volleyball and now its about to end. The real challenges of my life is about to come."

On the other hand, Cherry Quizon was emotional on thanking the people who became part of her journey as a student-athlete. But most of all, she dedicates her achievement to her mother. "...I must say, I offer this achievement to you Ma! This will be my Birthday GIFT for you. You have been my inspiration throughout the journey. Thank you for everything and I love you." she said. Four people who graced the hallways of San Beda College. Four names who became part of the athletic renaissance of the mighty red school. Four identities who left the portals of their Alma Mater with indelible marks both inerasable and distinct. Once a Red Spiker, always a Red Spiker.

PERPETUAL TAKES GAME 1 OF THE FINALS

Saturday, February 4, 2012 0 comments

On February 3, 2012, it was the beginning of the end of NCAA Season 87 as the San Beda Red Spikers faced the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA in game one of a best-of-three finals format. The energy was immediately palpable as one walked into the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. One could not help but be awed by the sights and sounds of the place -- the camera lights shone brightly, the drums’ reverberating booms sounded overhead, and the crowds anxiously cheered their players on. The stage was finally set for the showdown.

Set one commenced perhaps with a bit too much gusto as a series of misplays gave UPHSD the early lead. It was only until Team Captain James Lorca shot a quick set to Middle Hitter Carlo Rodriguez that the Red Spikers got the lead. They would keep it with a tool off the blockers’ hands from Outside Hitter Mhelvic Biscocho and a good amount of setter dumps from Lorca. Sensing that UPHSD was itching for a comeback, Libero Pocholo Apostol dug two hard hits in the same rally to keep the score tied at 11-11.  The UPHSD team, however, fought hard. Clinching the lead yet again at 14-16, they maintained it until Rodriguez put his hands up for a block-kill at 24-23. Their efforts were for naught though, as UPHSD aced San Beda to end set one at 26-28.

San Beda was pumped up in set two as Apostol immediately dug a hard ball, which Middle Hitter Jay-R Loria promptly converted into a kill. With block from Opposite Hitter Gilbert Ablan, San Beda would see its highest lead yet at 3-1. The Mendiola-based team would go onto 10-7 with a high line shot from Outside Hitter Lorenzo Capate and an ace from Lorca. They kept the lead up to 13-8, but through unfortunate events, were kept at thirteen with seven consecutive points from Perpetual for a score of 13-15. Ablan stepped up to keep the Red Spikers in the game, but the UPHSD block was too big.  The set ended with Rodriguez being blocked at 22-25.

It seemed that the Red Spikers ran out of gas for the third set, as it was a constant catch-up game for them from the get-go. They tried for a few comebacks and eventually tied Perpetual at 8-8 with a hard hit from Capate, but they were just too hard-pressed to find the energy to fight back. The set would end yet again with a score of 22-25.

Overall, the Bedans proved that they had the ability to keep up with the reigning champions. Ablan won this game’s top scorer title with 15 kills. Apostol garnered an amazing amount of 18 digs, while Lorca had an unprecedented 5 kills as a setter.

Remember, though, that this is not the end of NCAA Season 87 volleyball. You can still show your support in game two, which will be on February 6, 2012 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, at 2PM. It will also be televised on Studio 23.

Keep faith! As one Marilyn Vos Savant once said: “Being defeated is often a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent.”

SAN BEDA THWARTS ARELLANO

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 0 comments

On January 25, 2012, Ninoy Aquino Stadium stood witness to what may go down as NCAA Season 87’s most ferocious fight for glory. The San Beda Red Spikers overpowered the Arellano University Chiefs in four sets of 25-19, 27-25, 13-25 and 28-26, proving that all it takes is a whole lot of heart to overcome adversity.

As expected, set one opened with a bang. Opposite Hitter Gilbert Ablan’s defensive skills were immediately put to the test as he dug a hard spike, which Outsider Hitter Lorenzo Capate converted into an easy point. From thereon, the rallies were quick-paced and the scores were kept close. It was only until Lorca delivered an ace serve to Arellano’s libero that the momentum shifted in San Beda’s favor for a score of 13-11. Trying to keep the momentum going, Lorca efficiently drew the blockers away for Ablan to pound the ball to the floor. Outside Hitter Mhelvic Biscocho, sensing Arellano’s itch for a comeback, twisted and buried the ball down the line to keep them at 17-15. Approaching as if he were going to hit the ball on the second touch, Lorca ingeniously faked Arellano’s blockers for Capate, giving the latter ample opportunity to swing hard. Capate then put an end to the first set by hitting an overpass with force.

Dynamic play was rampant as both Ablan and Capate pushed through their blockers at the very start of set two, giving San Beda the lead. Arellano University standout Outside Hitter, Chris Salvador, wanting to keep pace, swung hard but to no avail. Lorca put up an impenetrable wall and blocked him for a score of 6-5. For reasons unbeknownst to the audience, Arellano’s coach then chose to switch his starting setter, John Munoz, for Rover Quiminales. This kept things interesting as Quiminales proved himself worthy of the substitution. Capate stepped up and decided to tip the ball over a triple block to earn his team the score of 9-8. The ferocity ensued throughout the set and AU eventually caught up to San Beda with a score of 20-22. It was only because of Middle Hitter Carlo Rodriguez’s three consecutive kills that San Beda clinched the lead at 26-25. The set ended with Biscocho blocking AU’s Salvador.

Despite Middle Hitter Jay-R Loria’s fantastic swing at a shooter backset to garner an early lead for San Beda, AU hung on tenaciously. It seemed that AU finally gathered its wits together with the setter substitution in set two. Showing their strength in offensive tempo variation, they managed to win set three with a twelve point lead.

Fresh from a pep talk from Coach Christian John Cuevas, the Red Spikers were rejuvenated and ready to re-enter the fray. After hitting the ball exaggeratedly way out of bounds, AU’s Middle Hitter Ronie Aranjuez got hit in the face by a block from Capate, much to the San Beda crowd’s delight. Arellano, though, eventually got up to a lead of 3-7. It was only after Ablan’s two consecutive kills and Biscocho’s deciding spike that San Beda managed to overturn the lead at 15-14. Loria, playing exceedingly well by contributing blocks all throughout the game, earned a point for his team by stuffing AU Outside Hitter John Carlo Lozada for a score of 19-16. He later on tooled the AU blockers to assure the lead at 27-26. Who could have expected that the game would end with a net violation on AU’s part?

Overall, the San Beda Red Spikers were able to play their game, and play it well. They managed to meet their objectives and neutralize AU. They reduced Lozada’s kill count to nine, thereby forcing AU to rely on Salvador, who earned an overall 25 points.

Capate led the Bedan team with 19 kills, followed by Ablan with 13 kills. Both Loria and Rodriguez chipped in 11 markers. Pocholo Apostol, San Beda’s Libero, took the brunt of receptions and enabled the Red Spikers to capitalize for the win.

The Red Spikers are now preparing for their showdown against the University of Perpetual Help Altas which will be held on January 27, 2012 (Friday) at  the Ninoy Aquino Stadium at 9AM.
